As a Christian, One is Truly Never Alone

By Rodney D. Reider

I was in Europe attending University and had taken a train to Denmark with seemingly good clean-cut guys I had recently met. Now, however, I was wandering the streets alone and experiencing a funk of sorts. I love history. I wanted to learn more about the city, its architecture, and encounter and enjoy its past. They just wanted to get high. Turns out they came just for the "legalized" drugs. I left them to their demise and kept walking around the city. As I did, I poured out my heart to God and told him how thankful I was on Easter for all He had done. I also shared with Him how lonely I was with all my family and friends back in the States.

Shortly thereafter, I stumbled across a large group of people bunched up in a public square. I almost walked around but decided to stop and see what they were viewing. As I crept closer, it slowly began to dawn on me that I was watching a play of Jesus. The Resurrection story was being acted out in a public square! I was quickly swept up in the amateur but passionate acting. Despite the language barrier, I understood and was again overjoyed with the Lord’s story. After it ended, I stood there at peace. My Lord led me there in my loneliness miles from anyone I knew and far from family and friends to remind me of His story. To remind me he is in control.

Afterward, one of the actors came up to me. He said he felt moved to speak with me (He was the only one of the group that was truly proficient in English). As we talked, he expressed joy that I was already saved. He invited me to join him and some of the others of his acting company. They were all Christians. We had lunch by a large windmill (they did this for me!) and talked of God, the city and their struggles as Christians in such a corrupt and permissive area (the legalized prostitution and drugs). They shared with me the damage the permissiveness, sin and lack of morality was doing to their beloved city. They were sad but determined.

My new friend shared that following each play he would wait for God to move Him to speak with someone in the audience. Most often he would be lead to speak with unbelievers in the crowd about being saved. He felt lead to speak with me for another reason and wanted to know what it was. I shared with him that I just needed a friend. It was a great day. Jesus is my friend and is always with me (Matthew 28:20).
